MACA, Mt Dove - Tecweigh Installation

MACA approached Instrowest in December 2012 to inspect and calibrate two weightometers on their Mt Dove mine site that were reading erratically. The problem MACA was having was that the Integrator (a Schenck Intercont Plus) was not totalising, inconsistent readings were given and very high readings with little to no product running. Two Instrowest technicians were able to attend the site the following day after completing works at a nearby mine site, to help get the belt scale back up and running. After looking into the issue on-site and running numerous calibrations of the units, it was confirmed that both scales were unserviceable and the best course of action was to remove the faulty unit and start fresh with a new weightometer solution. That day measurements were taken for a new Belt weigher; once back in Perth, Instrowest was able to immediately quote a new installation, ensuring a quick turnaround.

It was decided the best option would be to install a new Tecweigh WY15, chosen for its ease of use, accuracy, and dependability. The Tecweigh WY15 comes complete with in-built calibration weights and a WP20 Integrator. Understanding the financial impact the weightometer failure had on MACA, Instrowest worked hard to ensure the job could be completed as quickly as possible. Knowing how easily a job can be delayed or held up as the result of missing parts or equipment, the decision was made by Instrowest and MACA to have Instrowest Technicians drive from Perth to Port Hedland (Mt Dove). By driving to the site Instrowest techs were able to take with them an Instrowest service ute and dedicated weightometer installation trailer, stocked full of possible spare parts, necessary tooling, and the weightometer frame, making sure any unforeseen problems could be easily rectified.

Once on-site, Instrowest technicians quickly got to work removing the old unserviceable Schenck system. Once removed, our technicians started work on the new Tecweigh. With the use of Belt Lifters, Instrowest technicians are able to safely and quickly maneuver frames in and out of the Stacker. Once in, the WY15 frame was secured to the stringers, with the idler frames then evenly spaced over the weigh area. The frames were then shimmed and string lined to ensure maximum accuracy. The Tecweigh integrator was installed into a cabinet. Once the installation had finished, zero, span, and speed sensor calibrations were performed. Due to the experience Instrowest technicians have in regards to the Tecweigh unit and weigh frame installations, our technicians were able to complete the job within two days, enabling MACA to be up and running as soon as possible.

Technicians also commissioned and linked up a remote totaliser and rate display from the WP20 integrator to the client’s onsite PLC SCADA system.

Results

The Tecweigh installation turned out to be a great success with MACA’s lost work time kept as short as possible, with a majority of work able to be completed during a scheduled shutdown day.

MACA is now able to use their Tecweigh weightometer as a reconciliation basis between their scales and their client’s scales with any discrepancies quickly rectified.
